The genus Hyphantus is restricted to South America and Hyphantus olivae was described by Vaurie in 1963, using individuals collected in Vila Oliva, a district of Caxias do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul State. During the 2000/2001 season, H. olivae was observed attacking vineyards in the Northeastern Region of the State. The buds of grape were bored by adults, causing damage to the shoots reducing grape production. Due to pest attack, losses of 30% were observed in Vitis labrusca, mainly in Niágara and Isabel cultivars. This is the first report of economic damage caused by H. olivae and of a plant as a host of the insect. In the laboratory, methidathion (0.04%), fenitrothion (0.075%), imidacloprid (0.021%), acephate (0.075%), deltamethrin (0.0015%) and clorpyriphos methyl (0.072%) sprayed on adults using Potter's tower (1.8 mg/cm² of humid residue) caused 100% of mortality 48h after application.
