This article points out changes in consumption among poor people in Brazil. It is suggested that the discrepancy between the increasing amount of poor people and the improvement in consumption standarts is related to a wide variety of structural changes, among which public policies, variation in price structure, smaller size of families, new role played by women and increasing credit supply.
