ABSTRACT
Fernando Henrique Cardoso’s place in the canon of Brazilian Marxism is not compatible with the prominence with which Marx and Marxism appear throughout his work. This article presents evidence of such incompatibility and explores the hypothesis that it is not a mere consequence of Cardoso’s ulterior career in professional politics. His misplacement, we argue, is due to a conjunction of factors, internal and mostly external to his work.
