A Linked Data prototype for semantic cataloguing of publications

Abstract

This article presents the proposal and subsequent construction of a prototype for semantic cataloguing of scientific publications. The prototype developed follows the Linked Data principles of the novel Semantic Web proposed by the W3C consortium and is operational. The proposal has as differential the fact all publications' digital files be semantically annotated with semi-structured metadata intelligible by machines, allowing software agents assist us in the tasks of searching, integration and processing of such publications, establishing a Linked Data knowledge base of publications. The research that supports the study and development prototype presents concepts inherent to the Semantic Web, the standard of semi-structured data Resource Description Framework (RDF) and the use of ontologies for representing knowledge domains. Functional tests are shown and were engaged with some publications also related to the theme, demonstrating the prototype's ability to provide information accessible to people and machines (software agents), through content negotiation. The prototype is hosted and available for online checking for any interested in the subject of this article.
