Mental Health and Primary Health Care: Meanings Attributed by Community Health Agents

Considering the recent norms from the Ministry of Health, which regulate the relations between Mental Health and Primary Health Care, this research aims to study the feelings of Community Health Workers (CHW) about Mental Health and its implication in their daily work, as well as their views of the University's Multiprofessional Residency in the actions of the Health Care Program. This is a qualitative study based on Depth Hermeneutics, conducted through semi-directed interviews and participant observation. Results indicate concentration of Mental Health care in Mental Health Centers, especially with medications. A supportive role by the Residency is noticed through the listening and accompanying of the CHWs, who encounter psychic suffering situations in their daily work, but often feel unprepared for them. The Residency also strengthens the principle of integrality in care, as it qualifies the CHWs' work and guides them in difficult situations. It can also help as an articulator of the work, by bringing these healthcare services closer together.
