Cis-Trans Conjugality: Reinventing Bonds, Destabilizing Certainties

Abstract

In the contemporary era, conjugality can be experienced in multiple and varied forms, in the midst of various possible affective bonds. However, academic productions dedicated to understanding the dynamics of romantic relationships among transgender persons are scarce. Considering this gap, this study aims to investigate the dynamics of marital relationships in a couple made up by a transgender man and a cisgender woman. Data consisted of transcripts of audio recordings obtained from episodic narrative interview, and the analysis was guided by the queer theory. The participants reported a continuous and dynamic process of renegotiating bodies and desires. Before the lack of institutional support and the omission of public policies aimed to support trans couples and families, family support and the help from friends and relatives emerged as decisive elements for the consolidation of the couple’s material subsistence.
