Latin American Psychology: challenges and possibilities

The 50th year celebration of the regulation of the profession of psychology in Brazil signals the recent and ongoing efforts of psychologists to contextualize the psychological knowledge with the reality and the living conditions of the Latin American population. Currently, psychology undergoes a critical reformulation process which considers the peculiarities of historical, cultural, political, economic and social changes in the subjective constitution of the individuals. In this way, it proposes an alignment of this epistemological knowledge with other Latin American countries due to the similar experiences of Iberian- Catholic colonization, late modernization and exploitation of natural and human resources of the continent. However, building a Latin American psychology faces challenges, such as the differences among the countries, multiculturalism and geopolitical interests of nations. This essay aims to understand the process of formation and epistemological construction of cultural-historical psychology searching in the literature analyzed the main opportunities and challenges for the integration of psychology with other Latin American countries. Anyway, it is observed that by engaging in satisfying the demands of the population and the implication in the process of social transformation several possibilities for action are offered to psychology.
