Communitarian Psychology and Public Health: story of an experience of the Psi Practice in a Basic Unit of Family

This paper reports an internship experience in a Family Health Unit in Santa Maria-RS that aimed to analyze the practice of community psychology and strategy facilitation in communities located in a public health context. The users joined in this experience, referred to the psychology service, were assisted by a multidisciplinary team. In the context studied, the strategies used were interviews, home visits, informal conversations and interaction in community spaces. All strategies above were important for the mapping of the real community, for network services as well as for the observation of how they work. With regard to ethical issues, it was noted the importance of breaking the traditional standards of psychological care to build an ethic that embraces the principles of interdisciplinarity. It was observed that at the end of this experiment these strategies of community action from the perspective of community psychology promoted more integrated actions to the needs of the population served by the unit. This experience pointed at the importance of questioning the role of the models provided by psychology in public health services, when discussing a proposal for action that is committed to community strengthening and engagement for the exercise of citizenship and the security of the users.
