The daily relationships and the black identity construction

The black Brazilians have been exposed to situations of daily humiliation. They learn early, through effective mechanisms of ideological reproduction, that the identification characteristics that are positively valued are the white people’s and that they cannot reproduce the ideal of white European in order to be socially accepted. The objective of this study was to emphasize some processes to which black people are led in the construction of their identity, focusing those that occur in everyday situations, especially in the family, school and work situations that reproduce the dominant social norms and tend to maintain the established social order. To understand them, we rely on some evidence, mainly those of a black woman - Lígia, 34, a teacher at a public school. Her testimony was given through guided conversation. The results suggest that family, school and work are spaces in which racial prejudice undergoes a process of feedback and suggest some processes that can generate new perspectives of action in search of a more just and more human society.
