Parents social skills and the parent-child relationship

The present study aimed at: (a) comparing/correlating indices of social skills repertoire and parents involvement in the upbringing of their children and (b) comparing fathers and mothers in the two set of indices. The sample was composed of 22 mothers and 13 fathers who had children in the 1st grade at primary school. Both parents filled in the questionnaires Quality of Family Interaction from the Parents Perspective and the Social Skill Inventory (HIS- Del Prette). Data analysis showed no difference in involvement intensity of both parents with their children. Parents with better social skills repertoire were more involved in their children's upbringing. Such results suggest that the parents' social educative skills repertoire is very important in order to maximize the child development and also points to the need of wider programs in this area involving parents and aiming at improving the quality of the relationship with their children.
