The role of the mirror at a Psychosocial Care Center

The role of the mirror in the treatment at a Psychosocial Care Center called CAPS-T, using a Winnicottian psychoanalytical framework is provided. The mother, as a mirror, reflects to the baby, in her eyes, something that refers to the baby. The act of seen is one of the bases for feeling that one exists so that the true, recognized self may be constituted. However, when the role of the mirror is absent, the baby does not see itself and may lead it towards a reactive existence. At the Psychosocial Care Center, with its high incidence of psychotic patients, an adequate environment is offered, which includes the mirror-role, and facilitates the maturing process. The team must be a single mirror and must act in the patient's social environment, enabling the emergence of the role of the mirror in people and the construction of a more adequate environment.
