Adolescence and paternity: the right to create projects and to procreate

Current research investigates approaches certain repercussions of paternity’s in the adolescent father’s daily life, contributing towards the elaboration of public policies. In the context of eight participants interviewed (ages between 16 and 19 years), two had planned pregnancy with the partner, whereas five failed to do so. However, the later considered the son as desired; only one did not consider paternity planned or desired. Preventive behavior with regard to STDs was not mentioned the adolescents’ discourse; in fact, prevention was treated as a secondary concern, quickly shifting the discourse due to a false notion of trust. The difficulty in dealing and, especially, negotiating the use of preventive methods with the partner denounces the scarcity and/or the inefficacy of public policies directed toward the emancipation of the young population within the context of sexual and reproductive rights.
