The writing skills and reading comprehension as predictors of school performance

Abstract

The writing and reading comprehension are related to the communication capacity of the human being by means of written symbols, being linked to academic performance. This study aimed to seek relationships between instruments that assess writing and reading comprehension, and verify the predictive value of these for school performance. It investigated also possible differences in the performance of children in these tests as sex and grade. Participated in 485 children aged 6 to 12 years, of both genders, recruited from the five Brazilian regions. The instruments used were Escala de Avaliação Escrita - EAVE , Cloze Test and Teste de Desempenho Escolar - TDE. The results showed significant and strong correlations between all tests and showed the EAVE and Cloze as able to predict performance in TDE. This sample showed no significant difference between the sexes, but the tests were sensitive to detect differences between school years.
