Contradictions in the school discipline process: analyzing incident books"

Historically, schools have taken on the mission of disciplining children and teenagers, supposedly with the purpose of making them fit in society and adapting to social norms. One of the instruments which was used for this purpose is called "Incident Books", and have been around schools since 1920. Taking this into account, we tried to understand how these books are used in schools nowadays, how using them has been interpreted by teachers and what are the teachers ́ feelings about the registers. In our analysis, it can be pointed out that the registers are not very effective in terms of the pupil wanting to learn, but they play a role of disciplining and standardizing. It can also be observed that, based on the analysis of interviews with the teachers in which we used the focus group technique the registers tended to take on a new meaning, rather protecting schools and teachers, even though this protection can be understood more as symbolic than effective.
