To celebrate the Brazilian Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences, giving the speech-language and hearing pathologists an update in each one of the areas. To include the Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences, giving visibility to the social and environmental interferences destined to work as examples and suggestions. To acknowledge the Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences, identifying leaderships and acknowledging new talents.

These were a few of the principles that guided the Brazilian Speech, Language and Hearing Society in the organization of the XV Brazilian Congress and VII Speech, Language and Hearing International Congress. The good results which were obtained reflect the development of the Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences and the development of our Scientific Society along several years.

The consistent scientific development of the Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences allowed the establishment of rigorous criteria for the selection of lecturers, which in turn guaranteed the high quality of the symposiums, conferences and round tables. This quality was also reflected in most of the research presentations sessions, presented as posters and orally.

The board of directors was involved in activities destined to minimize the environmental impact of the Congress and to multiply the interference of the Speech, Language and Hearing Congress in Gramado and region. For this, we had the individual support of several colleagues and also had the collaboration of the Departments and Committees. This availability, as well as the great response to the suggestion of bringing to Gramado donations for the flood victims of this State, indicates a solidary and conscious group that has a great potential of achievement and enough generosity to accept suggestions.

In the opening ceremony, approximately a thousand people shared the tribute paid to Professor Iêda Russo, who received the Speech, Language and Hearing Merit Award of 2007. To recognize the involvement of key-elements in the construction of our science and of our profession is a fundamental characteristic of our development, and the unity shown on this occasion is essential for the continuity of this process. This same unity was perceived at the closing ceremony, in which more than 1,200 people applauded renowned researchers and young scientists whose work received rewards.

During the days of the Congress it was possible to have a picture of the Speech, Language and Hearing Science: a science and profession with high scientific development; constituted by solidary and generous people, conscious of their role in our planet and society; capable of recognizing and appreciating their leaders and new tracks in front of them and determined to celebrate all of this with joy and friendship.

I think that this is the picture of the Speech, Language and Hearing Science that we should keep in our minds, as a reminder of what we can do.

Difficulties, of course, still exist. The problems and challenges of the Brazilian Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences continue to exist. But they are also opportunities to develop, improve and to search for solutions.
