Local knowledge on the formation of socially vulnerable youth in the M’Boi Mirim region and its surroundings

Abstract

This survey takes education as the pivotal axis for dealing with the social vulnerability of the youth in the M’Boi Mirim region and its surroundings. Through qualitative interviews, teachers, school principals and local supervisors from schools (15 regular schools and one youth and adult education school) and complementary training institutions (three youth centers) were listened to. The schools that were examined show difficulty in dealing with their challenges. Overwhelmed by the social role they perform, they face diverse problems, such as financial restrictions, unstable teaching staff, school evasion, violence inside and outside the school environment, and the difficulty in transforming the school into a decisive and diverse place. However, there are schools, youth centers and local teachers developing effective strategies to deal with the social vulnerability of the youth, creating mechanisms of non-discrimination, making room for dialogue and shared respect, and opening the doors for a frequent and daily social interaction with the neighborhood, among other actions.
