Non-heterossexual life frames in sociology textbooks

Abstract

This article discusses how non-heterosexual lives are framed in high school sociology books from the 2015 National Textbook Program. These books deal with LGBT issues, unlike what is found in most textbooks, where these issues are silenced. Analyzing all sociology books approved by the Program in 2015, the article presents regular frames, in which continuities in a discursive order are recognized, and discontinuous frames, which present ruptures in this order. Overall, the ways of framing the LGBT lives are situated in an othering logic which broadens the distance between the reader and the topic under discussion. The discontinuous framings are brief, but offer an opening, a difference in the ways of showing LGBT issues within the textbooks, giving rise to new possible directions.
