Kohlberg and the "Just Community": developing ethical sense and citizenship in the schools

This article describes the "just community" technique for moral education, proposed by Kohlberg and his collaborators at Harvard University, which is based on this author's theory of moral judgment. Starting from the older technique of hypothetical moral dilemma discussions, the article goes on to summarize observations made in a "just community" program run in a midwest school, and presents a statistical analysis which reveals significant gains in moral maturity scores of the participants. The application of such programs to the Brazilian context is also discussed.
