SOCIOLOGY AND PSYCHOLOGY: SOCIAL DISPOSITION AS A ROUTE OF CONVERGENCE

Abstract

Motivated by recommendations from Pierre Bourdieu and Bernard Lahire about the advantages of the confluence of Sociology with Psychology, this paper presents reflections about the boundaries between the two disciplines. First, it discusses the most important antinomies that permeate this debate. Then, it analyzes the central role of the notion of social disposition for a reflection that intends to criticize the boundary between sociology and psychology. Subsequently, the argument developed here shows that privileging the social disposition makes it difficult to escape from a genealogical analysis of mental structures, which leads us to the state's role in the formation of the most elementary thought categories. The line of argument developed here highlights the possible theoretical gains of the combination of Lahire’s psychological sociology and Bourdieu’s theory about the state for those who study the social agents’ cognition.
