TRANSFORMING SOUTHEASTERN BARRANQUILLA FAMILIES´ CONFLICTS: AN EXPERIENCE FROM THE PARTICIPATORY ACTION RESEARCH (PAR)

Abstract

This article compiles the conception and management of conflicts on participating families of the Instituto Colombiano de Bienestar Familiar programs, in Barranquilla’s Zonal Center, and its process of resignification through a Participatory Action Research. Conflict is a phenomenon in the family life cycle and so is important to understand its genesis and coping. Through interviews, focus groups and participant observation, each family provided the perspective of their reality, and their self-recognition as conflicts protagonist. The results show an directionality of the children's conflict towards the parents and a growing interest of the latter to build family dynamics based on dialogue and focused on the children’s interests was found. The families raised the need to develop social skills as a basis for implementing alternative styles of conflict management.
