Following Lacan's reading of Joyce, I have developed a Lacanian thesis fundamental to the study of intergenerational transmission which uses a concept different from identification: symptom continuation. Moreover, the emphasis Lacan placed on the sinthome does not prevent sublimation from being considered as one of the other possible continuations of Joyce's initial symptom.
