Gender identity and woman-related attitudes

This study investigated the relations of masculinity and femininity to woman-related attitudes in present Brazilian society. A sample of 479 undergraduate students answered the Personal Attributes Questionnaires and a woman-related attitude scale. The masculinity and femininity scales indicated non significant and near zero correlations with two factors of the attitude scale as well as with the total scale. No significant differences were found between sex-typed women and men attitudes and androgynous, undifferentiated or cross-sex-typed women and men atttitudes. The results supported the multifactorial theory (Spence, 1984; 1985) which considers gender as a complex phenomenon characterized by various dimensions (personality attributes, attitudes, interests and behaviors) that have little or no relation to each other.
