Psychosocial issues in the era of new AIDS treatment

The present article describes the impact in the well-being (anxiety and depression) and quality of life of HIV-positive people when antiretroviral treatment doesn't present the expected results. Perceptions and expectations regarding antiretroviral treatment, anxiety and depression levels, social support levels and perceived quality of life were assessed by questionnaires. Eighty HIV-positive patients were assessed at the university hospital. Results indicate that both negative perceptions and expectations about treatment can modulate the emotional state and have a negative impact on the quality of life of the HIV-positive people. Adequate levels of social support have also a buffering effect on negative outcomes.
