Adolescence, acts and risk of suicide

Abstract

This article discusses suicide among adolescents, using the television series 13 reasons why as methodological strategy to further analyze what is at stake in the relations between adolescence, acts and the risk of suicide. To accomplish a thorough comprehension of the matter, we reflect on adolescence based on Freudian and Lacanian theoretical elaborations, emphasizing their tendency to act out and the risky behaviors that characterize this stage of life. The text also makes a distinction between acting out and Lacan’s concept of passage to the act and discusses how the analyst should clinically respond to adolescents who express any sort of suicidal ideas.
