Day nursery: development or survival?

This paper presents the results of a research of the service offered by the day nursery belonging to the Rio-Creches Program of the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro, comprising 819 families. The scope of the investigation was to reflect on the role of this institution, its contributions and limitations for the child education. The results emphasize the day nursery social relevance as institutional reference for the child development, in contrast to the merely economic and political needs of the society.
