Research and local action: on compasses and other travel instruments 1 1 This research work was done in a partnership between the Centro de Estudos em Administração Pública e Governo da Fundação Getúlio Vargas (CEAPG/FGV) and Universidade Federal do ABC (UFABC), with the professor and researcher Lucio Bittencourt, as well as the researchers Roberth Miniguine Tavanti of the Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo (PUC/SP), Guilherme Vasconcelos of the CEAPG/FGV, Murilo Silva and Bruna Moreira of the UFABC. We belong to a group of researchers that deals with the theme of Urban Vulnerabilities and Public Action on the edges of the city of São Paulo (particularly M’boi and Campo Limpo), in the metropolitan region with the same name, in the uncertain borders with other municipalities in its surroundings (Cotia, Embu das Artes, Itapecerica da Serra, and Embu Guaçu). In this stage of research, we have the collaboration of organizations in the region, including A Banca and the three state schools, whose names have been changed due to institutional issues. Our research perspective of the vulnerabilities and potentialities faced by the local youth elected the axis of cultural and social-educational practices as privileged action and research perspectives.

Abstract

From an experience in a region away from downtown São Paulo, Brazil, we discuss the research method used, based on the action research proposal. In 2016, along with two State schools and an organization devoted to education and culture, we developed 33 actions between workshops and round-table discussions with young people, teachers, managers, and cultural agents. As result, we could see the fruitfulness of actions guided by the listening and recognition of each person as a subject of law, capable of standing up for themselves. For the creation of the joint action strategy, we found out that the results depend on constructing partnership bonds as well as a willingness to listen and the configuration of each social and institutional context. Since it is not possible to establish a single parameter for all situations, the researcher’s position becomes their guideline: their sense of ethics is the compass needed to travel through the map of the territory.
