    Resumo em Inglês:

The Letreiro do Quinto rock shelter is located in the rural area of the city of Pedro II, Piauí, Brazil. The sandstone walls of the shelter are covered with prehistoric rupestrian paintings, painted in patterns of yellow and light and dark red hues. The chemical-mineralogical characterization of the prehistoric pigments was made with energy dispersive spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence and 57Fe transmission Mössbauer spectroscopy at 110 K. Results confirm the occurrence of hematite- and goethite-rich ochres and also that the pigment layers are indeed made of a mixture of clay minerals mixed with iron oxides.
  • Effect of metal ions on the in vitro availability of enoxacin, its in vivo implications, kinetic and antibacterial studies

Sultana, Najma; Humza, Erum; Arayne, Muhammad Saeed; Haroon, Urooj

    Resumo em Inglês:

The present paper describes the effect of metals ions on the in vitro availability of enoxacin (a second generation quinolone antibiotic) owing to drug-metal interaction. These interaction studies were performed at 37 °C in different pH environments simulating human body compartments and were studied by UV spectroscopic technique. In order to determine the probability of these reactions different kinetic parameters (dissolution constants (K) and free energy change (ΔG)) for these reactions were also calculated. It is proposed that the structure of enoxacin contains various electron donating sites which facilitate its binding with metallic cations forming chelates. Hence taking food products, nutritional supplements or multivitamins containing multivalent cations at the same time as enoxacin, could reduce the absorption of the drug into the circulation and thus would decrease the effectiveness of the drug. In addition, the MIC of enoxacin for various microorganisms before and after interaction with metal ions was calculated which in most cases was increased which possibly could impair the clinical efficacy of the drug.

Surface and electrochemical properties of the dimensionally stable anode Ti/(Ru0.3Ti0.7)O2 were studied as a function of the annealing temperature using different conditions in order to perform the cooling process of the oxide films (conventional thermal shock and the slow cooling processes). It was found that surface and electrochemical properties for the oxygen evolution reaction are both affected through the cooling process, being the electrode prepared at 400 ºC using the slow cooling process the less susceptible to wear. The Tafel slope obtained in the high overpotential domain was analysed in light of the apparent charge transfer coefficient.

Pedroso, Rosana Cristina Ribeiro; Peralba, Maria do Carmo Ruaro; Santos, João Henrique Zimnoch dos; Pizzolato, Tânia Mara; Fröehlich, Pedro Eduardo

    Resumo em Inglês:

This paper evaluates the adsorption capacity of zirconocene-based silica materials in the pre-concentration of antimicrobians (tetracycline, sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) in aqueous medium. These materials were prepared by grafting the zirconocene onto silicas pre-treated at different temperatures. The retention capacity of these materials was evaluated by off line SPE and HPLC-UV and the proposed methodology was validated in ultrapure, tap and river water. The recovery for tetracycline was 72% (in the solid phase A) and, for sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim was 68 and 95% in the commercial C18, respectively. The target antimicrobians were not detected in the Arroio Dilúvio (Porto Alegre - RS).
  • Retrieval of kinetic rates in reactions with semi batch liquid phase using ill-posed inverse problem theory

Sebastião, Rita C. O.; Braga, João Pedro; Virtuoso, Luciano S.; Borges, Emílio

    Resumo em Inglês:

A neural network procedure to solve inverse chemical kinetic problems is discussed in this work. Rate constants are calculated from the product concentration of an irreversible consecutive reaction: the hydrogenation of Citral molecule, a process with industrial interest. Simulated and experimental data are considered. Errors in the simulated data, up to 7% in the concentrations, were assumed to investigate the robustness of the inverse procedure. Also, the proposed method is compared with two common methods in nonlinear analysis; the Simplex and Levenberg-Marquardt approaches. In all situations investigated, the neural network approach was numerically stable and robust with respect to deviations in the initial conditions or experimental noises.
  • Removal of high-molecular weight polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

Vasconcelos, Ulrich; França, Francisca P. de; Oliveira, Fernando J. S.

    Resumo em Inglês:

Alternatives for the removal of high-molecular weight polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (HWM-PAH) from soil were tested by adding fertilizer or glycerol, as well as the combination of both. Experiments were carried out for 60 days in reactors containing a HWM-PAH-contaminated soil (8030 μg kg-1), accompanied by pH monitoring, humidity control and quantification of total heterotrophic bacteria and total fungus. Fertilizer addition removed 41.6% of HWM-PAH. Fertilizer and glycerol in combination removed 46.2%. When glycerol was added individually, degradation reached 50.4%. Glycerol also promoted the increase of degradation rate during the first 30 days suggesting the HMW-PAH removal occurred through cometabolic pathways.

Moura, Lyzette Gonçalves Moraes de; Rolemberg, Marlus Pinheiro; Ramos, Antonio Carlos da Silva; Santos, Maria de Fátima Pereira dos; Zilio, Evaldo López

    Resumo em Inglês:

Asphaltenes are fractions of crude oils that can precipitate and one of the parameters used in the prediction of the conditions in which this phenomenon occurs is the Hildebrand solubility parameter. In this work, it was evaluated the uncertainty propagation in the experimental determination of the solubility parameter of different crude oils, calculated from data of the asphaltenes precipitation by the addition of n-heptane, identified by optical microscopy. It was verified that the solubility parameter of an oil and the associated uncertainty are specific, being recommended that, whenever viable, it is determined parallel both, conferring higher credibility to the results.

Giovanella, Patricia; Bento, Fátima; Cabral, Lucélia; Gianello, Clesio; Camargo, Flávio Anastácio Oliveira

    Resumo em Inglês:

Mercury (Hg) occurs in the environment as a natural and anthropogenic element, and through the years the accumulation of mercury has affected the integrity of ecosystems and human health. This study presents a screening of microorganisms resistant to organic and inorganic mercury, the determination of the minimum inhibitory concentration of Hg, the estimation of the mercury volatilization by selected microorganisms and the dynamics of volatilization. Eight Gram-negative bacteria resistant to high concentrations of mercury (60 to 210 mg L-1) were selected, and these isolates showed ability to volatilize the metal. The dynamics of the volatilization of the Proteus mirabilis M50C demonstrated that in only 4 h of incubation it was possible to volatilize 72% of the mercury present in the culture. The results showed promising application for bioremediation strategies.

Silva, Fernanda Arruda Nogueira Gomes da; Garrido, Francisco Manoel dos Santos; Medeiros, Marta Eloísa; Sampaio, João Alves; Luz, Adão Benvindo da; Mello, Lívia da Silva; Silva, Flávio Teixeira da

    Resumo em Inglês:

Samples of Kaolin from different regions in Brazil were characterized by XRD, SEM and chemical analysis. A chemical bleaching study with pH adjustment was accomplished with the fractions below 37 μm, after classification by screening. The main objective was to evaluate the conditions of chemical bleaching that most increase the brightness of these kaolin's samples. Increases between 2.63 and 2.98% in the brightness (ISO) were observed after the chemical bleaching. We could say that the reduction of Fe3+ to Fe2+ during the chemical bleaching promoted an increase in the brightness, based on the Pourbaix Diagrams.

The gravimetric and electrochemical tests are the most common techniques used in determining the corrosion rate. However, the use of electrochemical polarization is limited to electrolytes with sufficient conductivity for which Tafel curves are linear. In this study, we investigated a technique in which working microelectrodes of AISI 1020 steel were used to obtain the Tafel curves in diesel oil. The strategy was to reduce the electrode area and hence the ohmic drop. The diameter of the microelectrode was reduced to a value where the compensation of the Tafel curves became unnecessary. The results showed that for electrodes with diameters below 50 μm, the ohmic drop tends to a minimum and independent of the microelectrode diameter.

In the last years, a great interest in nonequilibrium systems has been witnessed. Although the Master Equations are one of the most common methods used to describe these systems, the literature about these equations is not straightforward due to the mathematical framework used in their derivations. The goals of this work are to present the physical concepts behind the Master Equations development and to discuss their basic proprieties via a matrix approach. It is also shown how the Master Equations can be used to model typical nonequilibrium processes like multi-wells chemical reactions and radiation absorption processes.

Chemistry gradually became a discipline in a number of institutions in Brazil after the arrival of the Portuguese court in 1808. The first of these was the Royal Military Academy in Rio de Janeiro, founded by the Prince Regent in 1810. Due to lack of local personnel for the post of Professor of Chemistry the British chemist Daniel Gardner was hired. He occupied that chair until his retirement in 1825. In this article we discuss the circumstances involving the creation of that chair, its occupant and the contents of his course.
