Proposing an exploratory model of the relevant factors for the professional performance of Brazilian CIOs

The aim of this paper is to develop an exploratory model of the relevant factors for the professional performance of Brazilian Chief Information Officers (CIOs). To this end, an exploratory study was conducted using a quantitative approach. Six theoretical frameworks found in the academic literature in connection with this issue were taken into account. They describe the attributes of CIOs' professional performance, in order to acquire a better understanding of the research issue. After this, a questionnaire was developed. This was the data collection tool used in this study. It was applied through a web-based survey and obtained responses from 111 Brazilian CIOs. Following the data collection stage, exploratory factor analysis was used in order to obtain an exploratory model. As a result of this study, a model comprising seven relevant factors for the professional performance of Brazilian CIOs was proposed: business vision, support for the organization via information technology (IT), the ability to influence the organization, technical expertise, external networking, IT operations management, and an innovative view of the use of IT. At the end of the article, the limitations of the study are presented, along with further proposed steps regarding this line of research.
