Dr. Manoel Luiz Moreira de Sousa

Dr. Manoel Luiz Moreira de Sousa died on August 12, 2006 in São Paulo. He was a highly qualified, respected professional, a dedicated scholar in his subspecialty, and dear friend. He was the son of Sebastião Moreira de Sousa and Idalina G. Moreira de Sousa. Dr. de Souza married his beloved wife, Dr. Edwinet Cecy P. Moreira de Sousa, on 03/27/69, in São Paulo; she gave him two children: Patrícia Moreira de Sousa and Fernando Luís Moreira de Sousa.

Dr. de Souza attended the Escola Paulista de Medicina, having graduated in 1970, when he received his medical degree. In 1971, he finished the Anesthesiology Residency in that same institution. In 1974 he received the subspecialty title in anesthesiology from the Sociedade Brasileira de Anestesiologia and Associação Médica Brasileira. In the same year, after passing the board exam, he received the Título Superior em Anestesiologia, the highest awarded by the SBA.

Dr. de Souza was co-chair for the Centro de Ensino e Treinamento of the SBA (Teaching and Training Center) at the Hospital Beneficência Portuguesa de São Paulo until his death. He was always available to share his knowledge, encouraging his colleagues to undertake scientific activities and activities within the SBA.

He was assistant professor of Anesthesiology at the Faculdade de Medicina de Jundiaí from 1974 to 1978, and Voluntary Assistant in Anesthesiology at Escola Paulista de Medicina from 1972 to 1976.

He was Administrative Manager of the Associação Paulista de Medicina from 1984 to 1985.

Dr. de Souza was an Active Member of the Sociedade de Anestesiologia do Estado de São Paulo and of the Sociedade Brasileira de Anestesiologia, performing his duties with competence and balance. He always complied with requests to give his opinion both in the scientific field and at the society, defending the ethical and professional principles of our subspecialty with skill, aptitude, courage, and boldness.

He was a Member of the Commission that elaborated the first Medical Fees Table for the Subspecialty of the Associação Médica Brasileira.

Dr. de Souza held the following positions at the Sociedade de Anestesiologia do Estado de São Paulo: Second Treasurer from 1974 to 1975, First Treasurer from 1976 to 1977, President from 1978 to 1979, Scientific Director from 1984 to 1985, Member of the Conselho de Defesa de Classe from 1988 to 1991 and from 1994 to 1997, President of the Executive Commission of the 47º Congresso Brasileiro de Anesteslogia and 7º Congresso Luso Brasileiro held in 2000.

At the Sociedade Brasileira de Anestesiologia Dr. de Souza held the following positions: Member of the Comissão de Estatuto, Regulamentos e Regimentos from 1978 to 1979, Director of the Adminsitrative Department in 1980, Director of the Departamento de Ética e Defesa Profissional in 1981, Member of the Fiscal Council in 1984, Vice President of the Sociedade Brasileira de Anestesiologia in 1984 and President in 1985, President of the Conselho Superior in 1986, Member of the Conselho Superior in 1987, Member of the Comissão de Centro de Ensino e Treinamento em Anestesiologia from 1988 to 1989, Member of the Comissão do Título Superior from 1992 to 1994, Member of the Comitê de Anestesia Locoregional e Dor from 1995 to 1997, and President of the Executive Commission of the 47º Congresso Brasileiro de Anestesiologia and 7º Congresso Luso Brasileiro held in 2000.

He was highly active in his field, a skilled politician, with a clear and intelligent discourse. He always defended the deliberations of his chapter at the Representative Assemblies held at the Congressos Brasileiros de Anestesiologia.

Dr. de Souza attended several Congresses, Courses, and Anesthesiology Workshops as speaker, attendee, and organizer. He published uncountable scientific studies, and contributed to several Anesthesiology books.

He had enviable pedagogics and was a skilled speaker. His speeches were always current and with a large scientific content, grasping the attention of Congress' participants. He was a master of the art of Anesthesiology.

Dr. de Souza was a constituent of the Serviço de Anestesia de São Paulo Sociedade Cooperativa Ltda. (SEMESP) at the following hospitals: Santa Rita, Beneficência Portuguesa, São Camilo Ipiranga, Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein, and Hospital Infantil Sabará.

We lost a great Anesthesiologist, a model professional, friend, companion, and professor. His teachings, competence, congeniality, and joy will remain in the memories of those who knew him and will be an example for future generations.
