NECROLOGY

Dr. Waldo Monteiro Marcondes, M.D. * 04/09/1932 - 19/05/2005†

After a long suffering period, our dear colleague and friend Waldo Monteiro Marcondes has passed away last May 19.

Before graduating, Marcondes married Maria José Taques Bittencourt and had four children. He graduated in Medicine by the Faculdade de Ciências Médicas, Universidade do Rio de Janeiro in 1959 and was dedicated to surgery in the C.S. Santa Theresinha and Hospital Gaffree Guinle, but he has abandoned this specialty in favor of Anesthesiology where he soon obtained admiration and respect from his colleagues for the aplomb with which he would exercise it and for the interest and care he had for his patients.

He became head physician of the Hospital Maternidade Carmela Dutra and, by competitive examination, of the H. M. Souza Aguiar in 1967. In this same year he received his Title of Specialist (TEA) and in 1983 he was awarded the Superior Title in Anesthesiology (TSA).

In 1969, Waldo with his wife and children was traveling to Paraguay where he would visit his brother, Military attaché in that country when he suffered a terrible accident in which he lost his wife and two children, being severely hurt with facial trauma and enucleation of one eye. After this tragedy, all his colleagues and friends thought that he would definitely abandon Medicine. But what was our surprise when, some time after, he returned to the specialty he loved so much with dedication and care.

In 1975, when the also longed-for Dr. José Afonso Zugliani left the Leadership of the H. M. Souza Aguiar Anesthesiology department, Waldo has taken on this function, exercising it with dedication and competence until his retirement, always conquering the admiration of colleagues and Hospital Directors. In the next year he married Dulce Maria, a very special patient who crossed his way and with whom he had two children.

During the twenty one years heading the department, Waldo has carried out several other functions: Vice-President of the Clinical Staff, Vice-President of the Ethics Committee, Professor of the Teaching and Training Center, Supervisor of the Anesthesiology Program, National Committee of Medical Residence and member of the board of examiners for Anesthesiology competitive examinations of the Municipal Department of Health. He participated actively in Anesthesiology Congresses, Journeys, Seminars and Symposiums.

In 1996 he asked for proportional retirement and returned to his home city, where he worked for 8 more years in the Clinical Staff of Hospital Frei Galvão and in the UNIMED cooperative. During this period he has also participated in the Advanced Trauma Life Support Course ministered by the Trauma Committee of the American College of Surgeons, being duly approved. In 2004, SAESP has granted him an honor for merit plaque for relevant services provided to the discipline of

Rest in peace, dear friend. From where you are, continue to take care of all of us, with the devotion and love you dedicated to your patients!
