Floristic survey of the Characeae (Chlorophyta) of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul states, Brazil: Chara

Survey of genus Chara (Characeae, Chlorophyta) from the States of Mato Grosso (18°55'05"S, 54°50'39"W) and Mato Grosso do Sul (19°12'03"S, 57°35'32"W), Brazil, allowed identification of the following six species: Chara fibrosa C. Agardh ex Bruzelius emend. R. D Wood var. hydropitys (Reichenbach) R. D. Wood emend. R. D. Wood f. hydropitys, C. guairensis R. Bicudo, C. kenoyeri Howe, C. martiana Wallman, C. rusbyana Howe and C. socotrensis Nordstedt in Kuhn emend. R. D. Wood. Ninety three samples collected from 15 different municipalities were studied, the material being deposited at CPAP, HMS and SP herbaria. Presence of Chara fibrosa var. hydropitys f. hydropitys and of C. guairensis, C. kenoyeri and C. socotrensis is documented for the first time for the States of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul, respectively. Citation of C. martiana is pioneer for both States. Chara guairensis, identified from 9 different locations, was the best geographically represented species in the area, whereas C. kenoyeri and C. socotrensis were the least represented ones, being collected from only two locations each.
