The volleyball setter's perspective on relation with the coach: from formation to high level

Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the significance that the coach has for the volleyball setter. The sample (n = 18) was composed by champion setters from the formative and professional (Superliga) categories. The qualitative approach showed the importance of the coach in the team's offensive development and organization, game distribution, essentially in the training sessions and in the communication between coach and setter. In the game the setter prefers to act with autonomy in the distribution of the balls that are based in the previous training sessions, except when the coach proposes actions when the offensive system is under pressure. The training sessions should enable the setter to tactically understand the game rather than focus solely on passive attitudes of repetition.
