To authors of the article: “Prospective study of the inflammatory response in patients undergoing abdominoplasty after bariatric surgery.”

Dear authors, It is with pleasure that we read the article “Prospective study of the inflammatory response in patients undergoing abdominoplasty after bariatric surgery” written by Giuliani et al.¹, published inBrazilian Journal of Plastic Surgery (RBCP - Revista Brasileira de Cirurgia Plástica) in April 2021, which concluded that inflammatory markers act in patients undergoing abdominoplasty, reconstructive surgery for individuals who have experienced weight loss through bariatric surgery.

The significant weight loss of the patients in this study still left them with a Body Mass Index (BMI) in obesity I (29.62 kg/m²), so the baseline patterns of inflammatory markers were still high. With surgical trauma, these markers increased even more. However, the anti-inflammatory response improves after abdominoplasty, while the condition is minimized after some time, corroborating studies² that show that abdominoplasty improves the inflammatory condition of ex-obese patients.

In correlation to abdominoplasty, bariatric surgery (BS) results in significant and sustained weight loss in morbidly obese individuals with lower morbidity or mortality. Patients with this obesity also have systemic inflammations³, regardless of abdominoplasty or not, which are not related to sex, smoking or metabolic syndrome, but rather to pulmonary inflammation, which improves after BS and, consequently, is linked to a future abdominoplasty.

Aiming at improving the lives of people with morbid obesity, the studies responsible for controlling inflammatory markers have significance for the medical community³, as they correlate the benefits of abdominoplasty and are even more potentiated in patients who underwent a BS

And I take this opportunity to reinforce the need to instigate students, doctors and plastic surgeons, the interest in the study to better understand and guide what happens to our patients before, during and after our procedures. Since this directly interferes with our results. We consider it very important to understand the inflammatory response for the postoperative evolution and obtain increasingly predictable results.
