Communists? An analysis of the legislative proposals of PCdoB and PPS federal deputies.

Abstract

This article seeks to ideologically classify the legislative proposals (PLs) presented between 2003 and 2006 by federal deputies of the the Brazil Communist Party (PCdoB) and the Socialist Popular Party (PPS). For this purpose, the methodology envisages a detailed analysis of each PL. Considering the heterogeneity of the party structures, the objective is not simply to conclude that PCdoB and PPS are essentially left-wing or right-wing parties. Differently, our conclusions argue that the PCdoB and PPS are linked to the left or the right in specific areas of analysis of the PLs (Economy, State and Social). To achieve the main goal, the text is divided into four main sections. First, we analyze current research on ideology and partisan classification. Then, we present the object of our analysis. Next, we present the methodology of ideological classification employed. In the last section, we show the results of the ideological analysis.
