Emotions in political struggle: a fundamental debate

Abstract:

This paper undertakes a theoretical review of the role of emotions in collective action, especially political protests. The article begins by presenting the sociological literature on emotions that arose in the United States in the 1970s. This literature returned emotions to the social sciences as an object of study. The theoretical approaches of authors such as Hochschild, Collins, and Kemper were the basis of later scholarship exploring the relation between emotions and collective action. The article goes on to discuss the role of emotions in political struggle and especially for protests, since emotions can be created and transformed to mobilize people to engage in collective action.
