The author argues that internationalization does not undermine egalitarianism as a political project but that egalitarianism can survive internationalization only by getting rid of its traditional social democratic form. He sketches the political framework of an alternative form of egalitarianism and describes some egalitarian policies that might be advanced within that political framework, discussing the implications of these issues for citizenship. According to the author the new egalitarianism proposed requires a new public sphere with citizen involvement in collective problem solving: a more direct and deliberative democracy. The gist of this form of egalitarianism is to advance justice through a new form of politics that involves devolving or decentralizing certain characteristically state responsibilities to networks of deliberative arenas that cut across conventional public-private lines. The arguments are presented in abstract terms, but a principal (sometimes implicit) point of reference throughout is the United States.
