REVISTA BRASILEIRA, DIRECTED BY JOSÉ VERÍSSIMO – ENGINE OF A GENERATION

This study addresses the editorial Project of Revista Brasileira, in its third phase, between 1895 and 1899, taking into account its material aspects, such as the fact that an anonymous company (S.A.) financed it (something not covered in its pertinent bibliography). Directed by the literary critic José Veríssimo in a way that it served as a platform of eclectic ideas, the Journal responded to the intellectuals’ desire for autonomy – which set aside politics in order to converge on divergence. Thus, they founded the Brazilian Academy of Letters from the publication, whose editorial proposal also mirrored the literary project that Veríssimo shared with Machado de Assis. It was to be Brazilian, but not nationalist, it intended to be cosmopolitan, dialoguing with literature and editorial traditions from abroad, but without revering them. The goal was to create a movement that gave intellectual relevance to Brazil. It points to the importance of observing the press of that time in its transnational spheres, and the criticism in the circuits of the discursive network.
