This study aimed to investigate the main determinants of productivity in a cross-country sample. Therefore, measures of Total Factor Productivity (TFP) have been built, and we have estimated the effects of the Global Competitiveness Index (GCI), its subindexes and the 12 pillars of competitiveness on the former (TFP). The main results are that an increase in one unit of the GCI index leads to a net rise in productivity between 12 and 21%, which seems to occur via the "Efficiency Based” subindex, since an increment in one unit of this index leads to a TFP increase by more than 30%. In future studies, we intend to analyze, in more detail, the effects of the subindexes and the GCI’s pillars on productivity controlling for the countries’ economic development level.
