Casamentos Seletivos e Desigualdade de Renda no Brasil

This paper aims to study the evolution of marriage markets and its impact on income inequality in Brazil. Using data from Brazilian censuses from 1970 to 2010, we find evidence that the degree of assortative mating has increased in Brazil. This higher degree of sorting does not seem at first to influence income inequality, since this has decreased over time. However, by computing counterfactual analyses, we find that income inequality would have decreased even further were it not for the higher degree of assortative mating in the marriage market.
