Economic viability of irrigation of mango for the São Paulo State, Brazil

The State of São Paulo is the largest producer of mango in Brazil, but most of the orchards do not have an irrigation system yet and this technique presents a great potential to raise the mean productivity of mango in this State. A methodology was used in the present study for evaluation of the economic viability of installation of an irrigation system in mango orchards, which was applied for different localities of the State of São Paulo. Results showed that the acquisition price of the irrigation system, associated with its durability, is the most important factor to be considered in the viability analysis. The water charging for the use did not turn unfeasible the implantation of irrigation system and had little influence on the yield increment necessary to cover additional costs.
