Teaching physics through amateur radio

In our schools, the teaching-learning relationship, in most cases, is limited to the attempt of achieving the students approval at the end of the year, with no concern about meaningful and contextual learning and the social interaction that promotes discussion of the content. We present a proposal to Physics education by using ham radio as a motivational theme. We adopt the theories of meaningful learning, by David Ausubel, and social interaction, by Lev Vygotsky. The project, the assembling of a ham radio station for educational purposes, particularly in Physics, was applied in the second term of 2010, with voluntary participation of high school students from Colégio Militar de Porto Alegre, in the form of extracurricular education at the opposite turn of their regular classes. It is presented a report of the experience and its outcomes, as well as a guide for the teacher interested in replicating a similar educational experience.
