Revisiting the debate on the age of the Earth

Though for physicists and scientists in general the determination of the age of the Earth is an almost closed case, the same is not true for some socially influential groups that act in our modern society. In the present work we review some aspects of the history of the determination of the age of the Earth in the Victorian Era due to its importance and repercussion that can still be felt even today. We review the pioneering calculation due to Helmholtz concerning tha age of the Sun that plays an essential role in the problem and the also the solution due to William Thomson (Lord Kelvin) for the age of the Earth.
