Abuse as an Avoidable Cause of Medical Student Stress

Abstract:

The objective of this pape ris to call attention to abuse as a stressor experienced by medical students in Brazil. Medical student abue has become na international concern sice 1982 after the publication of Henry Silver’s article ‘Medical Students and Medical School’. Neverthless, the term abuse has not been mentioned in Brazilian publications about medical student stress before Costa’s thesis ‘Medica student abuse and sbjective well-being’, in 2003. Brazilian papers only discussed psychosomatic disorders and stressors related to the medical course itself such as volume of material to be studied, exams, evaluation and so on. Groups of avoidable causes of stress during the medical course as well as types of sbuse mentioned in reports are presented. A new classification of medical student abuse is proposed, based on the investigation of abuse perception in a Brazilian medical course.
