Medical Education and its Relationship to Social Needs in Health

Abstract:

This opinion article reviews the current debate on the issue of medical colocation in the contexto of social nedds for training human sources for the organization of the Unified National Health System in Brazil. Based on the current scenario and the history from the later half on the 20th century, when technological innovations led to a revolution in medical practice, the author approaches the distortions introduced by the biotechnology market in undergraduate and graduate medical education and the principal characteristics of graduationg physicians, as well as of health care and research services. The article also discusses the changes in medical training and some alternatives and proposals for reform in the curriculum and the Brazilian hospital system from the perspective of a public manager in the health field.
