Contemporary reflections on anamnesis in the view of medical students

This research investigates second and third year medical students' understanding of the biopsychosocial and environmental approach in anamnesis, and its contribution to developing integrated care. It is a cross-sectional, exploratory and descriptive study with a qualitative approach approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the Marilia Medical School (Famema) under protocol number 1400/11. Eighty students took part in the survey; 40 second-year and 40 third-year students. Data was collected by a questionnaire with two open-ended questions on the proposed theme. The results were analyzed by thematic content analysis. For the first question, three categories were identified: health and medical education, the health-disease process, and the doctor-patient relationship. For the second question, five categories: theory and practice in medical education, professional competence, clinical reasoning, health needs, and humanization. All the students demonstrated that they valued the biopsychosocial and environmental approach in anamnesis and indicate that it can support care, but they also identified gaps and difficulties in the learning practice.
