An analysis of bullying and hazing in a medical school

The term "bullying" is used to characterize a kind of insidious and devastating violence that negatively affects health and the school setting. Research on the issue in medical students suggests that it occurs in the form of repeated abuse, but the issue is still insufficiently explored during medical training. The current study aims to analyze the issue of hazing as it appears in the discourse of faculty and students when they are encouraged to report on situations of violence between undergraduate medical students. An exploratory, qualitative, cross-sectional case study was performed. Student representatives and faculty department heads were interviewed. The findings included various situations of abuse, specifically hazing. A wide debate on violence in the university is needed. In order to establish a school environment of respect and cooperation, adequate for personal development, violence must be banned from the universities
