Educational technology in the teaching of histology: research and development in a virtual teaching and learning environment

This article discusses changes in the teaching of Histology such as the technology that has been employed in learning contexts and pedagogical aspects inherent to the use of resources like digital atlases and virtual microscopes, in addition to presenting research on the development of a virtual teaching-learning environment in Histology, with participation by students and faculty. Virtual environments and other teaching resources based on information and communication technologies (ICTs) seek to accompany the current trend towards complementing classroom education with distance education tools that can be used optionally in continuing non-classroom study. The article concludes that although new technologies can contribute to the teaching of Histology, teaching materials based on ICTs should be consistent with the expectations of faculty and students as well as pedagogical and ergonomic issues, and the professors need to adopt such technologies not as isolated tools, but integrated into their teaching-learning strategies.
