Medical training at UFSB: I. Interdisciplinary bachelor in healthas first cycle degree

This series of papers discusses guidelines, curriculum and pedagogical strategies of a new medical education model implemented by the Federal University of Southern Bahia (UFSB). This opening article is aimed at introducing the Interdisciplinary Bachelorin Health as a first-cycle degree for medical training. First, a survey of advanced medical education models in the international arena is presented in order to evaluate their potential application to Brazilian higher education. Secondly, the structure and functioning of the Interdisciplinary First Cycle Degreeis described in terms of general education in the Arts, Health, Humanities and Sciences. Thirdly, emphasizing the concept of Area of Concentration, the Interdisciplinary Bachelor is discussed as a specifictrainingprogram and preparatory step for the 2-cycle medicine course. Finally, first cycle training in health care is analyzed as an opportunity to ensure more mature vocational choices, active learning, teamwork,up-to-date scientific and practical knowledge, and the conscious and critical use of health care technologies, based on ethical, political and humanistic values.
