EDITORIAL

The Revista Brasileira de Entomologia has reached its maturity. It is among the most permanent scientific journals published in Brazil, being printed without interruption since its foundation in 1954. RBE has increasingly being used by Brazilian and foreign entomologists to publish the results of their work.

After the inclusion of RBE in the SciELO (Scientific Electronic Library On-line), seven years ago, and more recently with the implementation of the on-line system for manuscript handling, the number of submissions has greatly increased. Also, the release last year of the impact factor, and cited half-life, of RBE by the ISI Web of Knowledge, has accredited it as an international vehicle for publishing in Entomology. Compared to other international entomological journals with a focus in taxonomy, this first IF of RBE (0.432) is quite significant. Also, the cited half-life above 10 years is the highest among the Brazilian journals included in the ISI database. All this has led to an increased number of manuscripts submitted to the journal in the last two years. Since 2006, we had an increase of almost 300% in the number of submissions, a tendency which points to a higher visibility of the journal. In order to partly accommodate for this growing demand, we also had an increase in the number of published articles in the last few years.

Starting in 2009, RBE is entering in a new stage. New publication policies will prioritize manuscripts that provide innovative approaches, those focused toward a broader audience and having a comparative nature. Also, manuscripts in English will have priority over those in Portuguese or Spanish. Our main goal is to make the papers published by RBE more visible as possible. In order to reach this goal, a total of 18 renowned researchers-twice as much as the number of people currently involved-have been invited to serve as Subject editors. All this should help maintain the high level reached by the journal and contribute to reduce the time between submission and publication. Currently, the manuscripts are being published in a few months after final acceptance.

We are pleased to serve as editors of the RBE, a journal that has grown, now for over 50 years, in a steady and solid pace, and has gained a place among the most qualified international journals in Entomology.
