The Revista Brasileira de Epidemiologia and the dissemination of knowledge

EDITORIAL

The Revista Brasileira de Epidemiologia and The Dissemination of Knowledge

The Revista Brasileira de Epidemiologia (RBE) has been appropriately included in regional and international indexation databases, with ample possibilities of free electronic access. LILACS and SciELO databases allow and help this access, tuning indexed publications into important tools to spread and disseminate technical-scientific knowledge and, in the specific case of the RBE, the knowledge in the field of Epidemiology.

As a consequence of this indexation, the journal has joined a wide group of periodicals included in the SCOPUS database (www.scopus.com). SCOPUS has recently become a broader environment for pursuing the necessary improvement for assessing and monitoring scientific production, in some situations anchored and concentrated on impact factors provided by the ISI/Thompson database and restricted to scientific journals indexed in the above mentioned. These are new and welcome initiatives that may provide more visibility to this process, pointing out that there already are indicators for journals indexed in the SciELO database.

As repeatedly stated, the Editorial Board of RBE follows all these processes, and, as it is oriented toward attaining, as is desirable and necessary, deeper and more visible mechanisms for sustained diffusion and dissemination of epidemiological knowledge, it is launching the possibility of making available an electronic English version of original articles published in Portuguese and Spanish. With the indispensable support of BIREME, and its highly commendable and fruitful contribution toward the dissemination of scientific knowledge, by means of its SciELO structure, RBE will make this form of publication available as of its next volume in 2008. This initiative, which has already been successfully tested by other domestic journals, as it is the case of our fellow-journal, Revista de Saúde Pública, will certainly represent an additional element toward better diffusion of our production to the global technical-scientific community.
